After how many days of use is it appropriate to replace the stoma baseplate?

As an important part of stoma care, the replacement frequency of the stoma baseplate is directly related to the patient's comfort and skin health. So, how many days should the stoma baseplate be replaced? Today we will discuss this issue in detail.

Factors affecting replacement frequency :

Skin condition: Skin condition is an important basis for judging the replacement frequency. If skin irritation, allergic reaction, redness, swelling, pain, and other symptoms occur, the chassis should be replaced immediately and a doctor.

Excrement characteristics: The characteristics of excrement directly affect the degree of corrosion of the chassis. For example, if the intestinal stoma has diarrhea, the excrement is relatively thin, and it is recommended to replace the chassis at least every 2 days. Thick stool will cause less corrosion to the chassis, and the replacement frequency is mainly based on skin sensation. For urinary stoma, due to the continuous outflow of urine, the chassis is more likely to become white, and it is recommended to replace it 2-3 times a week.

Chassis material: Chassis of different brands and materials have different durability and water absorption. Some materials are more durable and can be replaced more often.

Activity level: When there is more activity, the chassis may loosen faster and need to be replaced more often.

Seasonal factors: In summer, the weather is hot and people sweat a lot. The chassis is easily corroded by sweat and turns white. It is recommended to replace it every 3 days. In winter, the chassis can be used longer because it is dry and ventilated.

What should you pay attention to when replacing the chassis :

Regular self-inspection: Develop the habit of regularly inspecting the stoma baseplate. If you find that the adhesive on the baseplate has turned white by more than two-thirds, or the adhesive on the baseplate has failed or is leaking, you should replace it immediately.

Replacement time: When replacing the chassis, it is best to do it on an empty stomach or 2-3 hours after a meal. Avoid changing it immediately after a meal to reduce discomfort.

Skin cleanliness: Before changing the baseplate, make sure the skin around the stoma is clean and dry to reduce the risk of infection.

Heating the base plate: When replacing, you can heat the stoma base plate to close to body surface temperature, and press it gently for a while to make the stoma base plate contact more closely with the skin.

How to choose the right chassis?

Patients with different stoma types, skin conditions, and activity levels need to choose different types of base plates. For example, for patients with sensitive skin, you can choose a base plate material that is less irritating to the skin; for patients with high activity levels, you can choose a base plate that is more sticky and less likely to loosen.

With the continuous upgrading of stoma products, many chassis with special functions have appeared on the market, such as chassis with leak-proof functions, chassis with breathable functions, etc. Patients can choose the appropriate chassis according to their actual needs.

The replacement frequency of the stoma baseplate is not fixed but needs to be considered comprehensively according to various factors such as the patient's personal situation, skin condition, excrement characteristics, and baseplate material. Only by mastering the correct replacement method and precautions can we ensure the effective use of the stoma baseplate, maintain the health of the skin around the stoma, and improve the patient's quality of life.

I hope this article can help you better understand the frequency of replacing the stoma base plate and related precautions. If you have any questions or need further help, please feel free to consult a professional doctor or stoma nurse.
