Which dressing is used to aid healing after thyroid surgery?

After thyroid surgery, wound care is essential for healing and reducing scar formation. Among the many dressings, tension-reducing dressings are highly regarded for their ability to effectively reduce wound tension and prevent scars from widening. The following is an introduction to the use of tension-reducing dressings. Let's take a look.

A tension-reducing dressing?

The main function of the tension-reducing dressing is to reduce the tension of the skin on both sides of the wound, thereby controlling the widening of the scar and inhibiting scar hyperplasia. This is especially important for wound recovery after thyroid surgery because frequent neck movements can easily cause additional tension on the wound.

When should thyroid surgery be used to reduce tension?

Patients with ordinary intradermal sutures: It is usually recommended to start wearing a tension reducer one week after discharge from the hospital and when the wound dressing can be removed and there is no exudate from the wound. The tension reducer should be used when bandaging after suturing, especially when the incision tension is high.

Patients who have undergone fine tension-reducing cosmetic sutures: Since the tension-reducing effect of fine tension-reducing cosmetic sutures is better than that of tension reducers, it is usually not necessary to use tension reducers within 2-3 months after surgery. When the wound is almost flat (about 2-3 months after surgery), tension reducers can be used.

How should the tension-reducing dressing be used?

1.Use alcohol cotton balls or medical gauze dipped in alcohol to wipe the wound and surrounding skin to ensure that the wound is clean and free of dirt and secretions.

2. Prepare the tension reducer: According to the size and shape of the wound, cut the tension reducer into a suitable size, and it is best to cut the corners into rounded corners.

3. Paste the tension reducer: Gently attach the tension reducer to both sides of the wound, making sure that the tension reducer fits tightly to the wound without bubbles and wrinkles. When pasting, be careful not to touch the adhesive layer of the film cloth with your fingers to avoid reducing the viscosity.

4. After pasting, do nothing first. Wait for the film to stick firmly for about fifteen minutes before pulling the buckle.

5. Pull the buckle with 2-3 clicks. Generally, no more than three clicks in the early stage. Do not pull it all the way. Wait until the wound heals and then tighten it 1-2 clicks.

6. Regular replacement: According to the doctor's advice, the tension reducer should be replaced regularly. When replacing, pay attention to cleaning the wound and surrounding skin to avoid infection.

Note :

1. The earlier you use the tension-reducing patch, the better the effect. Generally, you should start using it immediately after surgery or after the stitches are removed, and continue using it for 3-6 months. It is recommended to wear the tension-reducing patch 24 hours a day, and it is best to continue using it for half a year after surgery. This is because the hyperplasia period of scars in most patients will gradually end within half a year, and the key time to prevent scar hyperplasia is 1-3 months after surgery.

2. The tension reducer is generally replaced every 2-3 weeks. Once it loses its viscosity, it should be replaced in time.

The tension-reducing dressing is a very effective tool in wound care after thyroid surgery and can significantly improve wound healing and reduce scarring when used properly. Patients should use the tension-reducing dressing under the guidance of their physician and follow the guidelines above for best results.
