Abnormalities in the healing process

Wound healing is a complex and delicate biological process, which usually includes three stages: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. Ideally, skin cells at the edge of the wound will migrate to the center and eventually close the wound. However, sometimes abnormalities occur at the edge of the wound, the so-called "curling edge" phenomenon, which hinders the normal healing process.

How do we identify and diagnose curling wounds?

Curled wounds may appear visually as rounded, raised edges that feel firm and thickened when palpated. Accurate diagnosis of curled wounds is key to treatment, and distinguishing between normal wound healing and curled edges is difficult to diagnose. Healthcare professionals need to use visual inspection, palpation, and possible imaging techniques to assess the wound condition. This abnormality is common in chronic wounds such as pressure sores, venous ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers. Curled edges not only delay recovery but also increase the risk of infection and further tissue damage.

rolled-edge wounds form?

Curled wounds are associated with a variety of factors, including prolonged healing time due to the persistence of the wound, poor circulation, pressure, and ineffective wound care. If chronic wounds are left untreated or poorly managed, the wound edges will thicken and curl inward, halting the healing process. Additionally, inadequate wound care, such as improper cleaning, dressings, or moisture control, can create an environment where wound edges curl.

Treatment of rolled wounds :

The goal of treating curled wounds is to remove the curled edges and restart the healing process. Treatment options include surgical debridement, chemical cautery, and mechanical debridement. In addition, maintaining an optimal moisture balance with advanced wound dressings, such as hydrocolloid or foam-based dressings, avoids excessive dryness or wetness of the wound, thus promoting an environment conducive to healing. Antimicrobial ingredients added to some dressings can help reduce the risk of infection. Regular changes in these dressings are essential to promote wound recovery and prevent complications.

Proper wound care and infection prevention are also important components of treatment.

Prevent it effectively?

Regular monitoring of chronic wounds, implementation of an effective wound care regimen, management of stress, and education of patients on self-care are all effective strategies to reduce the risk of rolled edges. Wound rolled edges are a complex healing complication that requires prompt identification and treatment. A comprehensive management approach, including appropriate care and treatment, can improve healing outcomes and reduce the risk of chronic wounds. For patients, knowledge of rolled edge wounds is important to promote wound healing and prevent complications.
