What to do if bedsores form black scabs?

Bedsores, also known as pressure sores, are common complications for patients who are bedridden for a long time or cannot change their position on their own. When bedsores develop to the stage of black scabs, this does not mean that the wound is about to heal but may be a sign of false healing, and pus and necrotic tissue may be hidden under the scab. Therefore, the correct treatment method is crucial to prevent infection and promote wound healing.

How to determine whether bedsore scabs are real or false?

How to judge whether the scab of a bedsore is true healing or false healing. The scab of true healing is thin and elastic and may be yellow-brown or white in color. It usually appears in the late stage of superficial ulceration or bedsore healing. On the other hand, the scab of false healing is thick and hard or appears as a black spot of soft tissue, and there may be tissue defects or cavities underneath. This situation is mostly caused by improper care.

How to remove black scab?

For thin and soft black scabs, you can disinfect and soften them with hydrogen peroxide, then rinse with saline, gently separate and remove them. For thick and hard black scabs, you can soften them with hydrogen peroxide, then wet compress them with saline, continue several times until the black scab softens, and then gradually remove it.

1. Removal of dead flesh

After the black scab is removed, there may be slough and pus underneath. The wound should be rinsed with saline and the slough tissue should be gradually removed with cotton swabs, tweezers, and scissors. For tightly adhered slough, the wound cream can be used to remove the slough in combination with the wound's self-dissolving liquefaction.

2. Muscle repair

The tissue defect under the black scab needs to be healed by myogenic repair. Silicone gel foam dressing can be used to fill the cavity. This dressing combines the advantages of silicone gel, such as good adhesion and comfort, with the exudate management and protection properties of foam dressing. Silicone gel foam dressing can create a good healing environment, promote the growth of granulation tissue, and wait for the granulation tissue to fill the wound before starting wound healing.

How to take care of it correctly in daily life?

The patient's position should be changed regularly to reduce the continuous pressure on the pressure points. Using appropriate mattresses and cushions can disperse the pressure and reduce the occurrence of bedsores. Keep the skin clean and dry, and avoid friction and moisture. Good nutritional support is also key to promoting wound healing.

The correct treatment of bedsore black scabs requires comprehensive consideration of the nature of the scab, the depth of the wound, and the patient's overall condition. During home care, the wound changes should be closely observed, and if necessary, timely medical treatment should be sought to obtain professional treatment and guidance.
