Can the wound be exposed to water?

Whether wounds can touch water is a question that has been bothering many people. We have been taught since childhood that wounds should never be exposed to water, otherwise they will become infected. However, this is not the case. Wounds can be exposed to water. The key lies in the type of wound and the way it is treated.

Dry healing:

It is a traditional wound healing method that achieves healing by allowing the wound to dry naturally and remove the scab. However, this approach has many disadvantages. The disadvantage is that dry healing makes bathing and washing inconvenient, and you are always worried about water getting into the wound. Moreover, the gauze easily adheres to the wound, and each time the gauze is replaced, the wound will be damaged again, which is not only painful but also causes the wound to heal slowly. In addition, dry healing cannot maintain the temperature and humidity of the wound, prolonging the healing time. After scabs form, it is easy to cause damage again during the process of scabs falling off, and after scabs fall off, unsightly scars are often left.

Moist healing:

In contrast, wet healing is a more advanced method of wound healing. In a moist environment, wounds heal twice as fast as dry wounds. This is because a moist environment is conducive to cell proliferation and differentiation and promotes wound healing. At the same time, the wound will not form scabs in a moist environment, and it will not be easily infected even if it comes into contact with water.

How to keep the wound in a moist environment?

1. Use functional wet wound healing dressings, such as hydrocolloid dressings, which can provide the wound with a slightly acidic closed space that is conducive to wound healing, accelerate wound healing, and also prevent the invasion of foreign microorganisms, and avoid the occurrence of infection.

2. We can also use some simple methods. For example, when bathing, you can use appropriate protection to prevent water from directly washing the wound. In addition, when applying ointment or moisturizer, you can choose some moisturizing products, such as petroleum jelly, glycerin, etc., to maintain a moist environment for the wound.

Different types of wounds are treated differently. For minor scrapes or cuts, we can wash them with running water and then apply an appropriate amount of ointment or moisturizer. For more serious wounds, such as burns, scalds, etc., more professional treatment methods are required, such as using wet healing dressings, debridement, etc.

Wounds can touch water, the key lies in how we deal with the wound. Choosing a wet healing method can help wounds heal faster and reduce pain and scarring. Of course, when treating wounds, we also need to pay attention to keeping the wound clean and hygienic to avoid infection.
