Do you know how to treat keloid scars?

Keloids are thick scars. It's not harmful to your physical health, but it can cause emotional distress. We are not helpless when it comes to keloid scars. Come and take a look with me below.

What are keloids?

Keloid, also known as a hypertrophic scar, is a pathological scar produced during the healing process after skin injury. This kind of scar continues to proliferate after the wound heals, beyond the scope of the original injury, and infiltrates into the surrounding normal tissue, manifesting as a hard, raised mass, often accompanied by pain and itching.

Why do keloids form?

The causes of keloids are complex and mainly include genetic, immune, endocrine, infection, foreign body stimulation, and other factors. Genetic factors play an important role in the occurrence of keloids, and people with a family history have a higher incidence of keloids. Immune and endocrine factors may also increase the risk of keloid scarring by affecting the wound-healing process. In addition, infection, foreign body residue in wounds, improper wound treatment, etc. are also common causes of keloids.

Treat:

Keloid treatment is a comprehensive process that may involve a combination of methods to suit different situations.

1. Silicone gel scar dressing care:

For newer keloid scars, compression dressings are a common treatment. Applying constant pressure to the wound through the use of a dressing made of elastic fabric or other special materials can help reduce or prevent scarring. This method is not only suitable for newly formed keloids but is also commonly used for scar management after surgery.

2. Freezing technology:

This technique can help you effectively reduce or eliminate those stubborn little scars. Of course, the treatment process may require multiple sessions. Although you may occasionally experience side effects such as mild blistering, temporary pain, or slight lightening of your skin tone, please be assured that these are normal reactions. In addition to these, we also offer corticosteroid cream, which effectively relieves itching and makes your treatment journey more comfortable

3. Laser Treatment :

Effective for large scars. Pulsed dye laser technology can smooth scars and relieve itching. Treatment cycles are flexible, with intervals ranging from 4 to 8 weeks. For best results, your doctor may recommend a combination of cortisone injections. However, laser treatment may cause side effects in people with darker skin, such as pigment changes, skin blistering, and scabbing, and requires special attention.

4. Surgery:

If the keloid does not respond to other treatments, surgical removal may also be an option. However, please note that surgery alone has a higher recurrence rate, ranging from 45% to 100%.

Prevention:

To maintain a good wound care routine, keep the wound clean and moist, wash it with mild soap and water, and apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or ointment. The use of pressure pads or silicone gel foam dressings is recommended to promote wound healing. For adults, these precautions should be implemented immediately after a skin injury. At the same time, it is also crucial to protect your skin from damage. Try to avoid body piercings, tattoos, and elective surgeries, as even minor injuries can trigger keloid scarring. If you decide to have surgery, discuss the risks of keloid scarring with your doctor, who can use surgical techniques to reduce the risk. After surgery, it is important to follow your doctor's post-operative care recommendations to promote smooth wound healing.
