Redness and swelling of scars?

In the early stages of wound healing, scars usually appear red, ranging from deep red to dark red or even brown. However, if the scar remains red for too long and shows no obvious signs of fading, this may mean that the scar is still in the "proliferative stage", which is what we often call a hypertrophic scar. In addition, it may be the formation of a keloid or due to a secondary skin infection.

Hypertrophic scars

Scars are in the proliferative stage within 1 to 6 months after injury and begin to proliferate noticeably after about 1 month.

Small processing method:

Slight redness: Follow the doctor's advice, use medical silicone ointment topically, and start active anti-scar care. According to the specific location and proliferation of the scar, choose the appropriate anti-scar products, such as tension reducers and tension-reducing stickers to reduce skin tension, and pressure products (scar stickers, elastic sleeves, elastic bandages, custom pressure clothing, etc.), and use scar creams with high silicone ingredients to inhibit proliferation and lighten the color.

Redness and raised areas: With proper treatment, the color of scars usually fades over 3 to 6 months.

Keloid

If a scar continues to be red, itchy, painful, and raised and spreads outward for more than nine months, we can almost certainly diagnose it as a keloid. In this case, the redness of the scar will not improve and may even get worse when irritated.

Small processing method:

For small keloids: local injection treatment and topical silicone ointment can be considered.

Large keloids: Surgical excision may need to be considered.

Note: Keloids are particularly prone to recurrence, and a single treatment method is not feasible. They must be combined with corresponding anti-recurrence measures such as radiotherapy.

Secondary skin infection

This is because the presence of foreign matter and bacteria will cause the tissue cells and mast cells in the skin blood vessels to produce an immune response, stimulating the dilation of capillaries, and causing the scar surface to turn red under inflammatory stimulation.

Small processing method:

Mild inflammation: You can apply silver ion dressing externally, which will generally gradually improve in about a week.

Severe cases: It is recommended to use Chinese medicine detoxifying ointment under the guidance of a doctor to achieve the antibacterial effect and promote healing.
