Wound care after thyroid surgery

For many friends who have undergone thyroid surgery, the headache-inducing problem after the operation is wound recovery. In fact, the neck is a place with great tension. When you turn your head, eat, stretch your neck, etc., when you need to move the neck skin, the neck wound will be pulled. If the wound is in a pulled state for a long time, it is easy to proliferate. So how do you care for it correctly? Follow me to learn below.

What issues should be discussed before surgery?

The first step to prevent scars is to communicate with the surgeon before surgery and choose a fine cosmetic tension-reducing suture. This suture method uses fine needles and fine threads, which can make scars thinner and more beautiful than traditional thick needles and thick threads. Continuous intradermal sutures of the incision and suture-free technology to bond the incision epidermis are both commonly used methods in modern thyroid surgery. These techniques can reduce the width and visibility of scars, laying the foundation for postoperative beauty.

Wound care within 1 week after surgery :

In the early postoperative period, avoiding infection is the important thing. Keep the incision dry, reduce sweating, and avoid contact with water, all of which are to prevent infection, because infection will prolong the healing time. At this stage, it is not recommended to use any scar removal drugs to avoid increasing the risk of infection. You can go to the hospital regularly to change the dressing and let the doctor check the recovery.

For cosmetic internal sutures that do not require suture removal, if the thread ends are exposed, you should go to the hospital for treatment in time. In the second week after surgery, you can start using iodine or saline to disinfect the wound. Avoid using iodine or alcohol because they are more irritating and may cause damage to the new skin tissue.

Care after wound scab falls off :

1. Prevent scars from getting wider: Using tension-reducing products, such as tension reducers and tension-reducing stickers, can reduce skin tension on both sides of the incision and make the scar thinner. It is recommended that you start using it immediately after the incision heals. The three months are the golden period for tension reduction, and the usage time is generally 3-6 months.

2. Prevent scar hyperplasia: 5-7 days after the incision scab falls off, you can start using silicone gel scar patches. These products can inhibit scar hyperplasia and improve the appearance of scars. Scar removal products should be used for six months to one year.

3. Prevent scar pigmentation: Avoid exposing the wound directly to sunlight to reduce pigmentation. You can use physical sunscreen measures, such as umbrellas or sun-proof clothing, or apply scar stickers. If pigmentation has already occurred, you can use Centella asiatica cream ointment, hydroquinone cream, or vitamin E lotion to promote pigment decomposition.

Postoperative precautions :

Scar care after thyroid surgery requires long-term persistence. Scars need to stabilize for 3-6 months or even 1 year. If the scar has proliferated and bulged, scar removal surgery may be needed to improve it. In addition, you should avoid tobacco, alcohol, and spicy foods, eat a low-fat diet, and increase your intake of fresh vegetables, fruits, and nuts.

The coughing problem that may occur after surgery can be alleviated by taking cough suppressants or taking appropriate body position changes. These measures help reduce the impact of coughing on the wound.

Wound care after thyroid surgery is a process that requires patience and careful attention. By choosing the correct suture pattern, using products such as tension-reducing tape, and following the care steps outlined above, you can minimize scarring and promote aesthetic healing of your wound.
