The reason why you keep getting acne may be due to the water quality

Acne, a skin problem that causes headaches for countless people, may be closely related to the water quality we come into contact with on a daily basis. Water quality not only affects our physical condition but also directly affects our skin quality. If you find that your acne problem has worsened after you moved to a new place of residence, then it's time to pay attention to the water quality issue.

In China, the distribution of water hardness is uneven. The water hardness in North China is generally higher than that in South China, and cities with better water quality are mainly concentrated in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces. For people who are not used to drinking hard water, occasionally drinking hard water may cause gastrointestinal disorders, which is what we often call "water and soil incompatibility".

Hard water is particularly harmful to the skin. After washing with hard water, your skin may become dry, rough, or even itchy. Your hair may also become dry, tangled, and difficult to comb. Worse still, hard water can irritate and dry out your skin because it can't remove dirt as effectively. Impurities or minerals in hard water can react with the natural oils or creams in your skin, turning them from oil to solid wax, which can clog pores and cause pimples and acne.

In order to protect our skin, we should try to choose soft water with lower hardness when washing our face. In nature, well water and spring water have the  hardness, lake water, and river water have the middle hardness, while rainwater, snow water, and distilled water have the hardness, so using these three types of water to wash your face is more beneficial to your skin.

Small ways to improve water quality:

1. Install a water purifier: This is the common method. You can install a filter in the shower or faucet to reduce the hardness of the water.

2. Boil to soften: Boil the raw water for 1 hour and let it clarify naturally, or dissolve half a cup of milk (or a pinch of salt) in one liter of water, which can also effectively soften hard water.

3. Use toner: Use toner every time after washing your face to effectively remove impurities left on your face. It is recommended to choose an alcohol-free toner unless your skin is particularly oily.

How to effectively care for acne-prone skin?

1. Cleansing: Choose mild cleansing products and avoid using irritating soaps. Do not clean your face too many times a day, usually 1 to 2 times is enough. Excessive cleansing may cause skin sensitivity or dryness.

2. Moisturize: Use moisturizing products suitable for your skin type, such as lotions or creams, to maintain the moisture balance of your skin. Moisturizing is especially important if you are taking acne medications, such as retinoids, as these medications may cause dry skin.

3. Sun protection: Many topical and oral medications used in acne treatment are photosensitive, so sun protection is essential. Follow the international sun protection consensus ABC principles: avoid sun exposure (Avoid), block (Block), and use sunscreen (Cream).

4. Avoid squeezing: Do not squeeze pimples with your hands, which may  to infection and acne scars. You can use acne patches to prevent touching and squeezing pimples while creating an environment that promotes healing.

5. Acne patches: Acne patches are translucent adhesive patches that absorb excess tissue fluid and sebum from acne, reducing the risk of infection and the possibility of acne scarring. They are effective for superficial acne but have a limited effect on deep nodular acne.

Understanding the impact of water quality on the skin and taking appropriate measures to improve water quality is an important part of maintaining skin health. By choosing soft water and using acne patches, we can better protect our skin and reduce the trouble of acne.
