How to deal with postoperative wound scars?

Surgery, no matter how big or small, leaves its mark on the body. These marks, the wounds, undergo a series of changes and eventually heal into what we call scars. So, how do these wounds change? How can we prevent and treat scars?

What will be the short-term changes to the wound after surgery?

The wound is usually most painful within 24 hours after surgery, but by 48 hours the pain usually subsides. For outpatient surgery, the pain is mostly mild to moderate and usually does not require medical intervention. There may be some swelling around the wound for the next 2-3 days, but this will subside over time. For wounds with large trauma or surgery, the area around the wound may gradually turn yellow 4 days after surgery. This is due to the destruction of red blood cells and the release of iron-containing heme. This is also a normal physiological reaction and will gradually disappear later.

What are the long-term changes to the wound after surgery?

In the long-term change process, local yellowing will usually disappear within ten days to half a month. At the same time, the wound may be slightly raised after surgery because the internal absorbable threads have not been fully absorbed. This situation usually gradually becomes flat within a month or so. In addition, the wound may appear slightly red and swollen for about a month after surgery, which is usually a sign of scarring. Although the use of anti-scar drugs can partially alleviate this condition, it cannot completely change its trend. Over time, this will gradually improve after about two or three months.

How to prevent and treat scar formation?

Before scarring occurs, we need to correctly handle the skin damage that has occurred, strictly control infection, and use a variety of methods for early intervention to promote wound healing. In the early stages of scar formation, especially within half a year, we can use local compression therapy, topical drug application, and silicone gel scar dressings for comprehensive treatment.

What is a silicone gel scar dressing?

It is a high-purity medical silicone ingredient that inhibits the proliferation of fibroblasts and capillaries, thereby preventing the fading of scar color. It is also one of the most convenient methods for daily life. Clean the scarred area with mild soap or water and pat dry.

Squeeze out an appropriate amount of gel and apply it to the scar.

Only by adopting a variety of comprehensive prevention and treatment methods can we effectively inhibit scar proliferation, make the wound healing process smoother, and ultimately achieve a good appearance.
